Pieps DSP Sport Avalanche Beacon Alternatives
In recent days, it has come to light that the Pieps DSP Sport avalanche beacon has some major issues.
After being used for a few seasons, the lock mechanism is proving to wear out which then allows the beacon to slide out of Send mode when placed into the holster.
This has unfortunately resulted in a few lives being lost as the victim was unable to be found in time to be saved.
Pieps has not admitted fault nor done a recall. Shops are not willing to remove them from shelves unless there is a recall, because “they sell so well.”
I personally own a Pieps DSP Sport beacon. I have now decommissioned it. I also had at least one instance last winter where we returned to the car and my beacon was not in Send mode. We are extremely careful in the mountains, because we have a young child, but had something happened it could have been fatal when it should not have been.
